An alternate for the 2004 Games, Gina Miles makes her Olympic debut in 2008 aboard McKinlaugh. In 2007 the pair contributed to a team gold at the Pan American Games, and Miles took home an individual bronze medal. In 2003 the pair won an individual bronze at a world cup event in Pau, France. In 2002 they competed at the World Equestrian Games.
Meeting McKinlaugh
Miles first met McKinlaugh in 1997, after setting her sights on qualifying for the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day event. Her friends Thom Schulz and Laura Coats imported the Irish Sport Horse, and Miles began riding him. Despite their drastic differences in size (Miles is 5-foot-3 and McKinlaugh stands at 17.2 hands), the two have made a successful match. By 2001, the pair had been named to the USEF Winter Training List under U.S. coach Mark Phillips.
Lifelong dream
Miles began riding when she was seven years old, and by the time she was 10 she got her first pony. Riding often and competing in local shows, Miles first realized her dream of pursuing eventing after attending the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. When Miles was 14, she started riding Sir D'Artagan, a seven-year-old Arabian gelding, aboard whom she would achieve her B rating.
Family life
Gina and her husband, Morgan, have two children: Austin, who is eight and Taylor, who is 20 months. When Gina isn't riding, she likes to take trips to Disneyland with her family, read Harry
