To keep your Custom Saddlery saddle looking and performing its best, regular care is essential. Our saddles are crafted from high‑quality leathers that develop a beautiful feel and character over time. Proper conditioning and maintenance help preserve suppleness, prevent dryness or cracking, and ensure a long service life. We recommend using Aviar leather care products, which are specifically formulated to maintain the quality and longevity of your saddle.

Leather Conditioning
Use Aviar Leather Balm to restore and preserve your saddle’s leather. This supports the natural aging process while keeping the leather supple and resilient. Apply a thin, even layer on clean leather — too much can saturate the material, while too little won’t offer sufficient protection.

Leather Cleaning
For routine cleaning, Aviar Leather Cleaning Spray gently removes dirt and surface buildup. Spray onto the leather and wipe clean with a soft cloth. Avoid strong detergents or household cleaners, as these can strip natural oils and damage the finish.

Flocking

Custom Saddlery saddles are filled with natural wool panels, with additional flocking beneath the thigh blocks to allow the saddle to conform to the horse’s shape. During the initial break-in period, the saddle may sit slightly higher in the front, but after a few rides it will settle for proper balance. To maintain an optimal fit over time, we recommend having a Custom Saddlery fitter check and adjust the flocking periodically, as changes in your horse’s shape or condition may require subtle adjustments.

Billets
Always check that billets are correctly positioned, especially the rear floating billets. Many fitted saddles have a rear billet keeper at the bottom of each flap to secure the flap closely to the horse. With a new saddle, you may want to keep the billet out of the keeper until the flap has fully broken in.

Swarovski Crystals

Some saddles feature Swarovski crystals. To maintain their sparkle, gently wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after each ride. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Never use harsh chemicals or soak the crystals, as this may damage the adhesive or finish.

General Care Tips:

  • Remove dust and debris regularly with a soft, damp cloth or sponge.

  • Condition the entire saddle — including seat, flaps, panels, and knee rolls — routinely or whenever the leather feels dry.

  • Never dry leather with heat or direct sunlight.

  • Avoid placing your saddle on posts or fences.

  • Check stirrup leathers to ensure they are smooth and free of cracks.

  • Use a mounting block instead of pulling on the saddle, which can strain the tree.

With consistent care using the recommended Aviar products, your Custom Saddlery saddle will remain soft, supportive, and elegant, providing comfort and performance for both you and your horse for many years.
